General Medical Council Investigates Nearly 50 Cases at Essex Hospitals

The General Medical Council (GMC) is investigating 48 cases after complaints about work carried out by doctors in Essex hospitals.

The news comes at a turbulent time for the NHS, who only recently came under increased pressure to reform as a report published by NHS England medical director Sir Bruce Keogh slammed 14 NHS trusts nationwide, including Basildon and Thurrock NHS Trust Hospital.

Eighteen cases were discovered at Queen’s Hospital in Romford, seven at both Colchester and Basildon, with six at Broomfield Hospital and five at the Princess Alexandra Hospital and Southend University Hospital. In one instance, a doctor was found guilty of misconduct and clinical negligence at the Basildon and Thurrock NHS Trust Hospital.

The investigation uncovered that Dr. Nikolaos Papanikolaou had failed to perform a caesarean section on three patients when he was obligated to do so, resulting in one still in one of the cases. The case has raised fresh fears about patient safety, particularly in the wake of the routine neglect at the Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust, which is at the centre of one of the worth health scandals in British history after up to 1200 patients died there between 2005 – 2009, many of them needlessly.

This isn’t the first time that Basildon and Thurrock NHS Trust has come under fire in recent times, after patient groups called for better standards of hygiene and cleanliness after a damning inspection in 2009.
