Action for Brain Injury awareness week

Action for Brain Injury awareness week will run from 11th to 17th May 2020 and is run by the charity Headway, and this year, the focus will be on memory loss.

Traumatic brain injury can affect people in many different ways, and suffering from memory loss can be upsetting for both the person suffering from the condition, as well as their friends and family.

Brain injury and memory loss

Memory loss can manifest itself in different ways and a brain injury can cause both long term and short term memory problems, although short term memory is more often affected.

Changes to short term memory can be very disruptive to daily life, which can manifest in many different ways:

  • Forgetting conversations or forgetting to pass on messages
  • Being unsure of what day it is, or generally losing track of time
  • Not being able to remember where you placed items such as keys or your phone
  • Repeating yourself as you have no recollection of saying something or asking a question
  • Being unsure of a route you have taken earlier in the day, on previously on a regular basis

These are just are few examples. There are many ways brain injury affects short term memory and they will be specific to each individual.
